These facts about addiction do not encompass all there is to know on the subject but are rather a short list to summarize where we are today in 2026, how we got there, and to reflect on a path forward.
Fact About Addiction #1: The Earliest Addictions Date Back to early 3000’s BC
It’s almost impossible to say exactly when or where humanity began with their addiction to substances, but we can certainly try. The two addictive substances that come closest and are most accurately recorded would be the use of opium, which has recorded uses as early as 3400 BC from Egypt, and Coca plants (the key component to modern day cocaine) which were estimated to have been used by indigenous South Americans in the early 3000’s BC.
Fact About Addiction #2: Fast Forward to Today, The Most Addictive Substance Globally is Tobacco
A engorging 1.2 billion people in the world currently use tobacco despite all the harm we have discovered to be associated with such an addictive substance. A large number of smokers will develop a nicotine addiction, making for a staggering estimate of 23% of the world wide population having a nicotine addiction.
Fact About Addiction #3: The Top Addiction in the United States Today is Alcohol by a Wide Margin
We have remarked several times how detrimental the social acceptance of alcohol is to perpetuating its addiction. A similarly engorging 29 million people in the United States, over the age of 12, reported having alcohol use disorder within this past year.

While not an addictive substance, internet and social media addictions are now recognized and treated within the United States. In this last year alone, adults averaged 7 hours of screen time throughout their daily lives, and the younger generation averaged an even higher 8-9 hours.
Fact About Addiction #6: Gen Z May Be Drinking Less but Are Finding New Addictions
The younger generation is under more pressures and has availability to new trends in substances than any of the other previous generations. Mental health disorders are on the rise and the connection to addictive substances increases even more for those impacted. While the curve might not point to alcohol as the topic addiction for this particular generation, misuse of prescription medications, psychedelics, and stimulants such as Adderall or Xanax seem to be high indexers.

Nitazenes alone posse a startling threat as this synthetic drug is even more lethal and potent that Fentanyl, which was one of the previous years ‘emerging drugs’. The better we prepare for a future with these addictive substances the more lives that may be saved.
Fact About Addiction #8: Addiction is a Treatable Condition
This is a fact that we, ourselves, are in control of. Addiction is a treatable condition, just like cardiovascular or metabolic diseases. Would we slander and shame ourselves or others for being diagnosed with cancer, or asthma, or any other condition? A condition is hard enough without ridicule, remember this fact, remember you or your loved one is in the majority, and remember it is treatable.
Fact About Addiction #9: Relapsing is a Part of Treatment, Not The End Of Treatment
As with any condition, treatment is not a one-size-fits-all path to success. It’s called a recovery journey for a reason. And as with any other condition, if symptoms relapse for whatever reason, you always continue treating.

It’s easy to fall victim to addiction, it’s what these substances are chemically armed to do.
