Crack vs Meth: What’s The Difference?

There’s a common misconception in the category of addiction regarding crack vs meth. Many individuals think they might be the same drug, with the same addictive traits, and associated risks but that is, in fact, a misconception. Crack and meth are actually two separate drugs with their own distinct differences. In this article we will explore some of those key differences as well as the few similarities when comparing crack vs meth.

Crack vs Meth, Similarities

The similarities when comparing crack vs meth are minimal but there a still a few that should be covered before exploring the differences between these two drugs. Crack and meth are both in fact stimulants, and are both highly addictive. Like many addictive drugs both crack and meth come with very serious health risks that can be fatal. Even the specific health risks when comparing crack vs meth differ from one another, but the overall impact of both these drugs weaken the immune system of the individuals that use them, causing premature aging and physical deterioration.

Crack vs Meth, Key Differences

When analyzing the key differences between crack vs meth, we will explore each difference across a variety of different areas.

Chemical Construction:
Crack is a form of cocaine which has been processed into a crystallized ‘rock’.  On the other end of the spectrum of stimulants, meth or methamphetamine is a fully synthetic stimulant, created in a lab unlike crack which is derived by the natural cocaine plant.

How They’re Consumed:
Crack, in its crystallized form, is primarily smoked, as a way to rapidly absorb the drug and its impact. Meth can also be smoked but has been found to be snorted, injected and even consumed. Not only does this vary how meth is consumed by individuals but also broadens the complications that can arise when a potential health risk or emergency occurs.

Duration of High & Crash Pattern:
Crack has a rapid onset after use, with effects lasting anywhere from 5-15 minutes This leads to an intense high and a quick crash, which often requires individuals to repeatedly use crack more and more to achieve the same effects. Alternatively, meth is a slower onset, lasting much longer in the realm of 6-12 hours. This extended high can lead to some individual going days without sleep or eating, This also leads to a delayed but severe crash.

Long-term Health Risks:
Crack has a higher likelihood of long term respiratory damage (from smoking), cardiovascular problems, severe mood swings, paranoia, risk of overdose, and frequent binge-crash cycles. Meth on the other hand, has a greater relation to long-term brain damage through neurotoxicity, severe dental decay (“meth mouth”), skin sores (from picking), cognitive decline, increased risk of psychosis, lasting mental-health issues.
