LICR BulletinAt Long Island Center for Recovery Inc., we know that therapeutic growth doesn’t always happen in a traditional group setting, sometimes, it happens one loop at a time. One of our talented counselors has been facilitating a crochet group for patients, and it has quickly become a cherished part of our programming.
The group offers more than just an opportunity to learn a craft. As patients gather with yarn and hooks in hand, the room fills with quiet conversation, shared laughter, and a gentle sense of camaraderie. Some arrive as complete beginners, others with prior experience, but all find a calming rhythm in the work.
Crochet has been shown to encourage mindfulness, reduce anxiety, and improve focus. In our group, it’s also a space for connection, a place where patients can talk openly, support each other, and experience the satisfaction of creating something tangible. Each project, whether it’s a scarf, blanket square, or simply a few carefully stitched rows, becomes a symbol of patience, perseverance, and progress.
Week by week, the group has transformed into more than just a crafting session; it’s a community. The simple act of creating with one’s hands has opened the door for meaningful conversations, quiet reflection, and supportive friendships.
At LICR, we are proud to offer spaces like this that nurture the whole person, mind, body, and spirit, and we are grateful to our staff for bringing creativity, care, and warmth into the recovery journey.
