LICR BulletinOn Sunday, July 19th, Long Island Center for Recovery marked a milestone thirty years in service with a celebration that felt less like an event and more like a homecoming.
More than 150 people came together: past and present staff, alumni from decades ago and alumni just weeks into their own journeys, families, friends, and everyone who has played a part in building L.I.C.R. into what it is today. For one afternoon, the lines between “then” and “now” disappeared, and it was simply one community celebrating three decades of recovery, resilience, and second chances.
The day had something for everyone. Live music set the tone, a taco truck and an ice cream truck kept everyone fed, and our own in-house staff cooked up dishes that reminded a lot of alumni of meals shared during their time in the program. Kids ran around enjoying games, and a few of our staff members were dunked in the dunk tank.
But beyond the food and the fun, what made the day unforgettable was the energy: laughter, hugs, and reunions between people who hadn’t seen each other in years. Alumni who walked through our doors more than 20 years ago stood alongside people who completed the program just months ago, swapping stories and reminding each other how far this community has come.
Speakers took time to look back, honoring the staff, counselors, volunteers, and alumni who shaped L.I.C.R. over the last thirty years, and to look forward, recognizing everyone continuing that work today. It was a powerful reminder that we are never alone on this journey. It’s built on community, on people showing up for each other, year after year.
None of it would have been possible without every single person who has been part of this journey, as staff, as alumni, as family, or as friends. Thank you for thirty incredible years, and here’s to many more.
